Technical constraints to Web surveying

Beyond the obvious methodological issues associated with Web surveying (for example, the availability of a sampling frame or the reach of the medium itself), there are some smaller technical issues which are of importance. A case in point: according to a ZDNet news piece, the European Parliament voted in November to adopt an amendment to the draft directive on electronic data collection and privacy to restrict the use of cookies. Also, an unknown percentage of Internet users disable JavaScript features in their browser, either to speed up some operations or for concerns of security or anonymity.

Meanwhile, many Web surveying systems make extensive use of JavaScript (in particular, to validate answers provided) and cookies (for example, to control entry into questionnaires). These are issues which require attention upon selection of the right Web data collection tool for the task — and the target clientele — at hand. Allow us to suggest investigating CallWeb, the Circum Network — Écho Sondage Web survey system.
