The professionalization of evaluation practice: definitions, process, and trade-offs

Prepared as a keynote for the Swiss Evaluation Society 2019 Conference

There is no doubt in my mind that evaluation must be continually professionalized. What does that mean? In a new text prepared as a keynote for the Swiss Evaluation Society 2019 Conference, I explain how I understand the notions of professional, professionalism, and professionalization. Professionalization being a path, a roadmap, it needs to be built and the ingredients of this map are: the conditions of the evaluation ecosystem, several mechanisms, a process of change, resources, and a grounded plan. The text describes the Canadian Evaluation Society path to professionalization and concludes with an analysis of the benefits and risks of professionalization as well as thoughts on the internationalization of evaluation professionalization.
